Archive for February, 2009

Well, I must say I knew this would be the case, but I am (and will continue to) learning so much!! Aside from the content stuff (such as how to explain stacked column graphs to year sevens who haven’t yet done a secondary unit on number, fractions or percentages) and the technology stuff (I love my smartboard!!! Well, most of the time, when it decides to load properly and I don’t have to restart it which has happened twice this week), I am facinated by the differences between my classes. For example, I have two year 7 Indonesian classes. One has only a few students who haven’t done indo before, the other has about half. The former is really keen, have been adding to the lessons with stuff they already know and are more than happy to have a go. The later are going to need a quite different approach and different kinds of support/motivation. To be fair, I should add that I just saw the second group period 6 on a friday, so I wont be making any firm judgements on that particular lesson, when everyone, including myself, was ready for the week to be over!

Anyway, I have had a great start to the year – everyone has been looking after me, and although I have a lot of work to do this weekend, I know where I am heading and I think I can figure out how to get there! The only thing that is still concerning me is yard duty. It’s really hard when all but a few of the year 7’s and 8’s are taller than me and know that I don’t know all of the details about how the lunch line works/what is not ok! Aside from suddenly growing 6 inches, I will just have to, as they say, “fake it ’till you make it” :-)

Keep smiling everyone!
